Vidhana Soudha

An imposing structure!  Taking up a couple of city blocks by Toronto standards.  It is the legislative chambers for the government.  It was built in 1956, out of granite and porphyry (rock with large crystals in it).  The steps leading up to the front are over 200 ft. wide!  All four corners of the building are adorned with large domes.

At the top is the emblem of India. It is four lions standing back to back - symbolizing power, courage, pride, and confidence.

After an attack on the Indian Parliament in 2001, there were concerns about the security of Vidhana Soudha. A 10 ft. high fence has been added to all sides near the footpath.

The Vikas Soudha is a replica built beside it for extra space for government offices.
